MANILA – Hundreds of thousands of commuters should brace for long queues at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT) starting Wednesday, as the capital’s busiest rail system is inspected for suspected damage, transportation officials said.
The safety check was ordered after a “strange” sound was reportedly heard in one of the trains, MRT spokesman Mike Tezon said.
The number of trains will be reduced to 15 while train speed will be reduced to 20 kph for the next four days from the usual 40-60 kph, Deo Manalo, MRT-3 director for operations said.
The adjustments will start at 2 p.m. Wednesday and will last until Sunday. Queuing hours could increase by as much as 30 percent during peak hours, officials said.
“To ensure the safety, icheck na lang natin lahat,” Tezon said.
“We expect long queuing hours and more traffic. Also it will have adverse traffic effects. Again we appeal to the riding public of their understanding,” Tezon said.
The MRT covers almost the entire stretch of EDSA from North Avenue in Quezon City to Taft Avenue in Pasay City. It serves roughly half a million people daily.
