MANILA, Philippines – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is preparing to modernize its information technology (IT) system processes as it plans to enable online driver’s license application and car registration.
As driver’s license applications and vehicle registrations could be done online overseas, he said the same should be done here.
“We are gearing toward online registration of driver’s license application and car registration. We need a credible IT to be able to enforce that,” he said.
Transport Secretary Arthur Tugade has earlier expressed support for online driver’s license application.
Earlier, Sen. Joseph Victor Ejercito filed a resolution urging the Department of Transportation to establish and implement online registration for motor vehicles to promote transparency in LTO.
Online registration is being pushed as the agency has been perceived to be corrupt amid allegations of irregularities in the registration of vehicles and issuance of driver’s license.
Through online car registration, the resolution seeks to simplify the process for registration of motor vehicles by reducing red tape and expediting transactions with the LTO.
Galvante said the LTO also intends to make available the driver’s license with five years validity by the end of the year.
