MANILA, Philippines – The operator of Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) expects seven new flights to be launched at the airport within the first quarter of the year.

GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. (GMCAC) said three of the new flights expected within the first three months of the year, would be offered by flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL).

PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna said the three new flights would be serving passengers from Cebu who are going to domestic destinations such as Clark, Puerto Princesa and General Santos.

GMCAC said new international flights are also expected to be available at the MCIA within the current quarter.

In particular, PAL is expected to offer charter flights to Wuhan and Wenzhou in China from Cebu.

China Eastern Airlines, is also set to launch charter flights to destinations in China such as Wuhan and Wuxi from MCIA.

MCIA connects Cebu to over 20 domestic destinations as well as 13 international points across Asia, US and the Middle East.

GMCAC, composed of Filipino firm Megawide Construction Corp. and India’s GMR Infrastructure Ltd., was awarded the 25-year concession agreement to develop and operate MCIA under the government’s public-private partnership program.

The joint venture took over the management of MCIA in November 2014.

Construction of Terminal 2 of the MCIA is ongoing.

GMCAC expects to open the second terminal of the MCIA by June 2018.

Earlier, GMCAC chief executive advisor Andrew Harrison said the second terminal would be catering to international flights to Cebu.

A second terminal would enable MCIA to reduce congestion as well as address growing passenger traffic.
