SIQUIJOR: An Enchanting Island of Natural Wonders and boundless opportunities

Situated in the Central Visayas Region of the Philippines, Siquijor is the smallest province in the region and the third smallest in the country. It boasts a land area of 343.5 square kilometers and a 102-kilometer-long coastline. Recognized for its vibrant marine biodiversity, white sand beaches, and crystal-clear waters, Siquijor is a gem of natural beauty and cultural richness despite its small size. The island’s enchanting waterfalls and verdant landscape further add to its appeal, attracting both local and international tourists who seek a tranquil getaway.

Siquijor’s mystique is beyond its natural wonders. The island has long been shrouded in folklore and mysticism, often called the “Island of Healers.” Traditional healing practices, including herbal medicine and spiritual rituals, are still prevalent, adding a unique cultural dimension that fascinates visitors and scholars alike. Annual festivals such as the Healing Festival, celebrate these age-old traditions, offering a glimpse into the island’s rich heritage.

Economic Landscape

Siquijor’s economy is mainly supported by fishing, agriculture, and a growing tourism industry. According to the 2024 report by the Philippine Statistics Authority, the province’s fertile terrain supports the cultivation of rice, corn, and other crops, while fishing remains a staple livelihood for many residents.  The abundance of the island’s agriculture feeds the island’s inhabitants and the surrounding area. Local farmers grow a wide range of fruits and vegetables in addition to staple crops, which are frequently offered for sale in the lively markets found all over the island.

Trade activities, primarily centered in the town centers of Siquijor’s six municipalities, and are sustained through goods sourced from Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental. The bustling ports facilitate the exchange of agricultural products, seafood, and artisanal crafts, creating a dynamic local economy. Small-scale industries, including coconut oil production and weaving, also play a crucial role in the livelihoods of many residents.

Infrastructure Development

Siquijor is undergoing major infrastructure upgrades to support its expanding tourism and economic sectors. These improvements are essential for improving the island’s accessibility, increasing the tourism potential, and promoting economic growth.

Under the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) program, 17 road infrastructure projects are underway, with a total investment of Php95.535 million. These projects include the widening and paving of major roads, the construction of new bridges, and improvements to rural pathways, ensuring better connectivity across the island. Enhanced road infrastructure facilitates smoother transportation for residents and tourists, reducing travel time and improving access to key attractions and local businesses.

Airport and Seaport Enhancements: Modernization efforts have been made at the Siquijor Airport to increase tourism and economic expansion. The passenger terminal has been upgraded with larger waiting areas and better amenities to offer a more efficient and comfortable travel experience. The airport’s capacity and connectivity to other regions have increased due to the extension of the runway to accommodate larger aircraft. The powerhouse and parking area have additional improvements that will further improve the operational efficiency of the airport. Similarly, the Siquijor port’s expansion has doubled the space available for docking vessels, greatly enhancing the flow of cargo and individuals. This extension allows ferry services to operate more frequently and dependably, making it simpler to get to and from the island. Improved port infrastructure, such as remodeled passenger terminals and docking areas, guarantees tourists a smooth and convenient travel experience and increases trade activities.

Provincial Infrastructure Projects: The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) has prioritized several infrastructure projects that benefit Siquijor. The overall development strategy of the island is anticipated to be supported by these projects, which are expected to boost local economic activity and job creation. One of the main goals is to raise the standard of living for locals by building new public facilities like community centers, hospitals, and schools. Building infrastructure for sanitation and water supply guarantees sustainable resource management and improves public health. Renewable energy initiatives also support the island’s environmental sustainability and energy security. Examples of these include solar and wind power installations.

Tourism Boom

Siquijor’s tourism industry is growing in importance; post-pandemic data indicates a notable increase in visitor arrivals. In 2023, there were an astounding 109,742 visits, up from 6,250 in 2021. Coordinated efforts to improve infrastructure and international marketing campaigns drive rapid growth. An essential factor in bringing Siquijor’s attractions to the attention of a worldwide audience and raising its profile internationally has been participation in international tourism fairs, such as the Internationale Tourismus-Börse (ITB) 2024 in Berlin.

Moreover, the Department of Transportation (DOT) has taken significant steps to ensure the safety and well-being of visitors. These measures include stringent hygiene standards, regular cleaning of public areas, and the provision of health services. These regulations are applicable to all tourist establishments, providing guests with peace of mind regarding their health and safety. The steady increase in tourist arrivals can be directly attributed to the effective implementation of these measures, which have significantly boosted traveler confidence.

Enhanced Tourism Circuits

To provide a comprehensive and immersive experience, the DOT has developed enhanced tourism circuits focusing on different themes such as farm, dive, and ecotourism. These circuits connect vital attractions and activities, offering tourists a well-rounded itinerary that showcases the best of Siquijor. Farm tourism circuits take visitors through scenic agricultural areas, offering hands-on experiences and local culinary delights. Dive circuits guide divers to the island’s top underwater sites, ensuring they experience the vibrant marine life Siquijor is known for. Ecotourism circuits emphasize the island’s natural wonders, including waterfalls, caves, and forests, promoting responsible and sustainable tourism. The DOT has also focused on developing new tourism products to diversify Siquijor’s offerings and attract more visitors.

As a testament to its commitment to responsible tourism, the DOT has made it a key priority to ensure the sustainability of tourism in Siquijor. The initiatives are not just about balancing economic benefits with environmental conservation but also about promoting eco-friendly practices among tourism operators, encouraging the use of sustainable materials, and supporting local communities. The DOT’s programs aimed at protecting marine and terrestrial ecosystems are instrumental in preserving the island’s natural beauty for future generations. The goal of Siquijor’s responsible tourism initiative, led by the DOT, is to preserve the island’s allure as a pristine and enchanted travel destination.

Investment Potential

The increasing number of tourists presents significant investment opportunities in Siquijor, opening doors for entrepreneurs and investors to capitalize on the island’s burgeoning tourism sector. With the growing number of visitors, there is a noticeable gap in hotel and accommodation options. Although there were 199 registered accommodation establishments in 2019, many closed during the pandemic, with only a few reopening. This gap presents opportunities for new hospitality businesses to cater to the diverse needs of travelers, from budget-conscious backpackers to luxury-seeking vacationers. Siquijor tourism-related investments are also being encouraged by the Philippine government and the Department of Tourism (DOT). The island is a top pick for tourists wanting to combine the best of both worlds: natural beauty and cultural diversity because of its unique charm, which includes its pristine beaches, waterfalls, and cultural mystique. Investment in boutique hotels, eco-resorts, beachfront villas, coffee shops, and restaurants can help meet the rising demand for quality accommodations, enhance the overall visitor experience, and attract local and international digital nomads.

To sum up, Siquijor is a captivating destination that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and investment opportunities.

The island’s tourism sector is on an upward trajectory, driven by substantial infrastructure enhancements and proactive government interventions. In addition to making travel experiences more accessible, these initiatives set the stage for long-term, sustainable growth, and development.

Moreover, Siquijor unveils abundant investment opportunities in various sectors, notably eco-tourism and hospitality. With strategic planning, vision, and investment, the potential to strengthen the island’s economic growth and safeguard its natural and cultural heritage is vast. The island’s promising future is a beacon of hope for both tourists and investors.
