MANILA, Philippines – Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) is launching its new solar subsidiary this week that will put up solar power rooftop solutions in commercial, industrial and residential sectors.

In a press statement, Meralco said it would unveil its solar unit called Spectrum to formally signal its entry into the renewable energy space.

“Our vision is to provide clean renewable, affordable and safe energy solutions to Filipinos today and Filipinos of the future,” Spectrum president Jose Rainier Reyes said.

“We want to empower commercial, industrial and residential customers with optimal and world-class energy solutions through the development of rooftop and utility-scale solar PV (photovoltaic) projects,” he said.

For its maiden project, it has installed a solar program at Robinsons Novaliches Trade Hall. Currently, Robinsons Novaliches has contracted 1.875 megawatts (MW) of solar power solution for its own power requirements.

For customers, Spectrum’s services offer a solar PV system that converts sunlight into electricity to power homes and businesses. Interested customers may opt to purchase or lease the complete system from Spectrum.

Benefits of solar adoption include monetizing one’s roof, enhancing property value, and reducing utilization of air-conditioning units, since solar panels provide insulation from the heat of solar radiation.

For partners, Spectrum offers end-to-end technical capabilities, and is supported by world-class service and product providers.

Meralco first announced its target to enter the renewable energy sector in 2015, when its chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan said they are looking at opportunities in the solar space by spinning off a new power generation subsidiary.

Meralco president Oscar Reyes also said the company is in discussions with developers of RE projects which include solar, wind, run-of-river, other hydro projects and gas.
