The government is looking to install 250,000 free wifi access points all over the country and build 47,000 more cell sites as part of the National Broadband Plan.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said the country is playing catch up with its neighbors in Southeast Asia.

“Vietnam now has 70,000 cell sites compared to our 20,000 cell sites,” DICT officer-in-charge Eliseo Rio told ANC’s Future Perfect Tech Shorts.

He said that this was despite the fact that the Philippines was 5 years ahead of Vietnam in rolling out its GSM network.

Rio said that to speed up the construction of cell sites, the DICT is looking to build “common towers” on government land, and lease these to telecommunications companies.
