MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel Corp. unit South Luzon Tollway Corp. (SLTC) is looking to spend over P3 billion this year for the expansion of projects, as well as for repair and maintenance.

In a filing, the operator of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) said its board has approved the capital budget of P3.041 billion for this year.

Of the total amount, P2.328 billion is allocated for expansion activities at the Toll Road 4 project or TR4 and the TR2.

TR4 is the extension of the SLEX from Sto. Tomas in Batangas to Lucena City in Quezon.

For TR2 which covers the SLEX segment from Filinvest exit to Calamba in Laguna, the expansion activities will involve putting additional lanes and toll plazas.

SLTC said it is also set to spend P438 million for enhancement activities including flood mitigation, conversion to LED (light emitting diode) lights, as well as improving the toll collection system.

The toll operator is also allotting P275 million for repair and maintenance.

“SLTC endeavors to continuously pursue improvement projects such as road widening, additional lanes and toll plazas, rehabilitation and other road repair works, flood mitigation activities and other safety features that will ensure operational efficiency with emphasis on the safety of the motorists,” the firm said.

As of the first quarter this year, SLTC’s net income reached P712.81 million, 12 percent lower than the P812.21 million in the same period last year.

SLTC attributed the decline in net income to the expiration of the income tax holiday it was enjoying last year.

Aside from SLEX, SMC also operates the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway, the elevated Skyway system and Skyway Stage 3, the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road or STAR Tollway and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Expressway.
