Drone technologies continue to advance significantly over the years and various organizations are starting to notice its applications in different fields, other than photography and videography.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, drones now have a new application: Aerial Disinfection. This refers to the use of drones in spraying disinfectant solutions to decontaminate streets and public spaces. This becomes especially useful as various studies have discovered that the virus is capable of surviving on surfaces outside of the human body for prolonged periods.
According to Esquire Philippines, one of the first cities to implement Aerial Disinfection in the Philippines is Pasig City. Having procured three (3) units of the DJI MG-1P octocopter, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto is planning to use these drones to help make the streets safer from COVID-19 threats. As of March 18, the drones are being tested at Rizal High School before deployment.
Unlike the pandemics of the past, we now have access to mainstream drone technology that can aid in our decontamination and containment efforts. Aside from spraying disinfectant solutions, drones can also be used for monitoring and surveillance during community quarantines. High definition cameras may be installed on these drones to monitor the movement of people and assess the traffic situation generated by quarantine checkpoints – allowing public officials to evaluate the imposed guidelines.
Once the COVID-19 threat is over, the drones purchased by Pasig City for aerial disinfection may be repurposed; (1) to enhance its local law enforcement capabilities in pursuing criminals through the use of Livestream video from installed cameras, (2) to deliver relief packages to remote locations, and (3) to help with the search and rescue operations during calamities using thermal imaging sensors.
